Background

John Crane is part of the Smiths Group, an engineering company in the FTSE 100. They design and manufacture seals and associated products mainly for the oil & gas, chemical, pharmaceutical, pulp & paper and mining sectors. John Crane is acknowledged as the global leader in its field.

The Challenge

After successfully delivering a previous database application to another part of John Crane, Logic Software was selected to develop an on-line data collection application to help with the company’s SAP migrations across 30 countries. John Crane was facing issues in developing a consistent approach to collecting, sorting and categorising data before integration with SAP.

The Solution

Initially, Logic Software undertook a period of consultancy to analyse the business processes and draft a specification.

The solution was to develop a web-based application, which allowed a central team at John Crane to manage the data collection and categorisation process in a measurable and effective way, but with daily involvement and input from the worldwide offices. The cleaned and validated data was then uploaded into SAP.

The Benefits

“Due to the custom written database application, we have benefited significantly. We have seen an increase in improved efficiency, and communication and reporting has never been easier. The application is now in productive use and we would have no hesitation in using Logic Software again or recommending them to others.” - John Carr, Project Manager for the SAP data integration project.
