Associated British Ports - web-based EDI solution

Responding to customer demand, ABP worked with Logic Software to develop a web-based application to manage the allocation of vehicles to shipping schedules for a large vehicle manufacturer at the Port of Southampton. The application delivers an EDI messaging hub to confirm arrival and departure of import and export vehicles from the Port of Southampton to worldwide destinations. It plays a critical part in the visibility of the transport and distribution of the vehicles. The application has been in use since 2005 and is now used, not only by ABP employees, but also by the vehicle manufacturer and shipping lines around the world.

ABP were tasked with delivering the complex EDI solution within a 12-week period. This seemed impossible at the beginning of the project but, due to the quality of the development by Logic Software, ABP managed to achieve the deadline. The application has been developed further since the initial project and has been a major factor in ABP being awarded the contract for the 2nd time.

Due to the excellent quality and fast delivery of the EDI solution, ABP recently awarded Logic Software with another contract to develop a solution to allow the operations team to manage the receiving and loading of cargo at the Port of Southampton. Again, this application provides a web-based solution to allow the operations team to manage the receiving and loading of vehicles with additional handheld terminals that are used in the compounds, on the berths and at the ship ramps. The handhelds capture the vehicle data and are then synchronised with the back office system. Development for the application commenced in April 2009 and is already being used within a parallel environment. The system is due to go live at the beginning of August 2009. We are already defining the next stage of the project, which will allow ABP to develop an EDI partnership with the shipping lines.
